TITLE: EXTENSION OF THE HIGH SCHOOL   |   YEAR: 2024   |   WHERE: WROCŁAW   |   FOR: Wrocław Municipality

Modern educational facilities transcend the traditional roles of teaching and learning spaces. They serve as comprehensive environments fostering individual interests, socialization, and teamwork skills among students. By integrating learning areas with communal spaces, these facilities create a unique ecosystem that embodies the principles of 21st-century education.

The proposed expansion and renovation of this high school are deeply rooted in these educational values.

The architectural design draws inspiration from the rhythmic repetition of typical school windows in the existing structure. This motif is extended to the new addition, with adjustments made to the spacing and proportions to align with the functional requirements of the program. The new wing's entrance is strategically placed near the existing building to minimize the distance from the courtyard to the student locker room, which remains in the old wing. The heart of the new wing is a spacious, three-story-high entrance hall, standing at 11 meters tall. This hall serves as meeting point and intersection of all routes used by students and staff, exemplifying unity and co-action.

Given the school's focus on science and architecture, the expansion project will exemplify rational design principles, incorporating the latest advancements in building automation technologies.

The architectural approach emphasizes the visibility of the building's structural and installation elements, rather than concealing them. This design choice allows students to engage with the raw structural concrete and exposed installation components, such as wires and cables, providing a tangible understanding of the complexities involved in modern building construction.
